Manhattan care guide / Check who pays

Ask about the use, not just the name.

A drug name is only part of an insurance question.

Ask your health plan about the specific product being proposed and its intended use. Your plan calls its list of covered drugs a formulary. With prior authorization, payment depends on getting the plan’s agreement first.

Could the treatment reason change the answer?

From the record

Medicare may cover a medicine for an accepted use besides weight loss, depending on the plan’s drug list and permission rules, as of September 2026.

Possible coverage is not a promise that your plan will pay, as of September 2026.

What is the temporary Medicare path?

GLP-1 is one of the body’s chemical messengers, called hormones. It affects appetite and blood sugar. Some medicines copy what it does.

From the record

Medicare’s temporary GLP-1 Bridge charges eligible people a $50 monthly copay for certain medicines, as of September 2026.

Your share of a covered charge is called a copay. The Bridge is separate from Part D, Medicare’s usual drug insurance, as of September 2026. A separate Medicare service handles Bridge approval requests and payments to pharmacies, as of September 2026.

The program begins July 1, 2026, with an end date of December 31, 2027, as of September 2026.

From the record

Your age, weight, other health conditions and type of Medicare plan affect whether you qualify, as of September 2026. A Part D plan payment toward a GLP-1 medicine during 2026 rules out Bridge eligibility for 2026, as of September 2026. This means money the plan paid, rather than a bill you paid yourself.

People with type 2 diabetes use the usual Part D route instead of the Bridge, as of September 2026.

From the record

As of September 2026, Part D caps the amount you pay each year for covered medicines. The $50 Bridge payments do not count toward that limit, as of September 2026. Low-income help through Part D does not lower the $50 Bridge payment, as of September 2026.

Get an answer for your own plan.

  • Ask your usual drug plan which route applies: its regular coverage or the temporary Bridge. Ask your doctor and pharmacist how a separate Bridge request is made.
  • Ask for the product and form covered by that route.
  • Ask what happens if permission is denied or the plan changes.
  • Keep the written answer beside the care quote.
